This contract involves major refurbishment works on the 110kV Line from the Great Island Generation Station in Wexford to Kilkenny Substation. ESB Approved GTS Staff are involved in taking the necessary Switching permits for works to proceed. A portion of the project involves fitting bird diverters by bicycle method over the River Barrow.

Project Summary
This contract involves major refurbishment works on the 110kV Line from the Great Island Generation Station in Wexford to Kilkenny Substation. ESB Approved GTS Staff are involved in taking the necessary Switching permits for works to proceed.

Challenges
The System outage is long term over weeks to facilitate the major installation scope, but the line may have to be restored at short notice in the event of a system requirement. The work consists of replacing all the existing conductors on 121 spans with new ACSR 430mm². The technique employed is using the old 200mm² conductor as a bond rope to pull in the new conductors with GTS Puller/Tensioner winches.

Result
This follows tensile testing of the 57 year old conductors for suitability. A notable feature is the restringing of conductors across the 479 metre span over the River Barrow, and the installation of highlighting devices on the new conductors which cross bird flight paths.

All the steel towers and the majority of the Wood poles on the line are also replaced. A rigorous line earthing procedure is carried out to ensure GTS crew safety and the earths are removed when the Works are complete.
